Most citizens, surrounded by trappings of their modern nation adored their new messiah in a way they had never felt about Jesus. By the thousands and tens of thousands, they attended mass political rallies to hear him speak, cheering him as he left his plane, train or motorcade. When speaking, he took their heartstrings between his hands and directed them like puppets. He blamed the nation’s ravaged economy and loss of pride on outsiders – anyone who did not look or speak or worship like the masses to whom he appealed. They applauded him. They cheered him. They adored him. Although he had led an insurrection against the government, which left four police officers dead in the street, people continued to worship him as a god made flesh. Being caught up in scandal after scandal, he emerged stronger than ever with the help of friends in the media. He manipulated them. They, in turn, profited by repeating the lies he spread.
