Salvation Army building faces demolition or restoration
RICHMOND – Salvation Army Store Director Phil Powers said he is unsure whether the new building attached to the store will undergo demolition or restoration.
The attached building suffered extensive damage in a fire three weeks ago. The fire destroyed the building’s contents and got into the ceiling and walls, Powers said. In addition, water from fire hoses drained into the basement, affecting the contents there.
The main building reopened June 28.
Powers said he awaits word from the structural engineer about the costs of demolition versus restoration. He then will consult with the insurer.
The community responded to help the Salvation Army after the fire, he said.
“A lot of people have been really good to us. Volunteers were calling up,” Powers said, asking about when they could help with cleaning and sorting. “That’s been really good. People have stepped up.”
