The more I cover motor sports, the better I understand basketball fans. Assuming you have stopped repeatedly ramming your head into a kitchen wall because that last sentence has confused the blankety-blank-blank out of you and are ready for me to continue, I will explain. Self-confessed basketball fans tend to be finicky. Generally, they like only one or two levels of the sport. And based on my experience, they prefer college or high school ball. Rarely do I talk to anyone who expresses their love for the pro game. If I had a dollar for every time that I have heard someone say, “I like college basketball, but I can’t stand the NBA” and then complain about how NBA officials never call traveling or carrying, I could buy an NBA team. Er, I could afford to buy a ticket for an NBA Finals game – at scalper’s prices. Um, I could park at TD Garden in Boston and then listen to my beloved Celtics play on their home floor on my truck radio because I could not afford even a nosebleed-section…
