‘IT’S AN HONOR’
RICHMOND – The sky is dusty gray, an odd contrast to the drizzle that falls steadily, lightly across the hillside at Woodland Cemetery.
Robins gliding down from trees that line the hillside to the north flit among tombstones set within a green lawn made lush by days of rain. Some of the stones are decorated with flags and flowers in honor of men and women, members of “The Greatest Generation” and others that have served their country in uniform.
Shortly before 10 a.m., about a dozen vehicles arrive, winding along a gravel path through the cemetery before finding parking spaces. Men and women take their places to observe Richmond American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars members unite to conduct joint Memorial Day services.
Ed Hughes gives the opening prayer, calling for a moment of silence, and then gives voice to the holiday’s purpose – “to honor the sons and daughters who have served.”
