RICHMOND – Seventy-six Richmond High School students graduated Sunday in the school gym before hundreds of relatives and friends on a rainy afternoon. The graduates entered the gym as the high school band, directed by Jeffrey Clymore, played “Pomp and Circumstance.” The “circumstance” part of the music underscored a year of overcoming adversity brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, something mentioned in addresses given by several speakers. “You survived it,” Superintendent Greg Darling told the graduates. Darling said the world faces challenges, which create opportunity. He advised the graduates on the value of carpe diem, meaning “seize the day.” “As a Spartan, please carry the shield and seize the day with pride and dignity,” he said. “Carpe diem, Spartans.” Principal Justin Remington said graduation marked the day seniors had worked toward for the past 13 school years. “You did it and you’re prepared for whatever comes next,” Remington said.
