‘Solid’ Buchanan wins javelin at Lexington
LEXINGTON – Blake Buchanan’s best boys javelin throw April 29 at the Bill Hamann Invitational at Lexington High School was a “solid throw,” Orrick varsity coach Paul Giffin said.
“Not a pr (personal record),” Giffin said.
But that throw was solid enough to win the event.
Buchanan, an Orrick junior, threw 47.32 meters. The runner-up, Lafayette County of Higginsville’s Austin Gard, threw 39.45.
Buchanan helped the Bearcats finish 10th in the boys team standings with 17 points. Sophomore Zander Stevinson also scored points, placing fifth in the high jump by clearing 1.7 and taking sixth in the long jump with his leap of 5.43.
Sophomore Kirra Vaughn was the lone Orrick varsity girl participant. Vaughn finished fourth in the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 9.18 seconds. The race went better than when she ran April 23 at the Mineral Water Classic in Excelsior Springs, where she placed seventh in 1:14.17.
“I actually had people running my time,” Vaughn said.
