Richmond relay team nears school record at invitational
LEXINGTON – Shortly after running the anchor leg to give Richmond the win in the boys 400-meter relay April 29 at the Bill Hamann Invitational, senior Adrian Church flung the relay baton in the air while standing on the Lexington High School football field.
The baton fling, Church confessed, was not because the Spartans had won the race.
It was because the team had finished in 43.82 seconds – .07 second short of the school record, set in 1993 and tied in 1995. The team was expecting to break the record that day, leadoff runner Layne Cavanah said.
“That’s been our goal every meet so far,” Cavanah said.
Church and junior Keyshaun Elliott, who ran the third leg, are convinced the team will break the record soon.
“I’m thinking either it’s going to be conference or St. Joseph Lafayette (when) we’re going to break it,” Church said. “That’s what I’m feeling.”
