Spartans feeling ‘new again, ready for track and field season

RICHMOND – This season is like a rebirth for Richmond’s track and field program, varsity boys and girls coach Mike Long said. In 2020, the Spartans “were really primed and ready to go” when they started training in March, Long recalled. Those who were ready to go included then-senior Dionte Marquez, who sought a return to the Class 3 state meet in the triple and long jumps. “He was really working hard, and just everybody was working hard,” Long said. But the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out Missouri’s high school spring sports seasons. Marquez and his teammates never competed in a meet. With spring sports slated to go on as planned, the Spartans “get to start fresh,” Long said March 5 during practice at the high school. “Everything’s new again,” he said. More than 50 student-athletes are taking advantage of the fresh start – roughly 35 in the boys program and 17 in the girls program, Long estimated. Seniors Adrian Church, Matthew Lopez and Jude Rumbaugh are among the male athletes. …
