Elderly living facilities begin to allow visitors

RICHMOND – While waiting for Oak Ridge Assisted Living Center’s doors to open, Marilyn Hamann sat in her vehicle on the parking lot. Expecting to see her mother in person after being separated for a year due to COVID-19 has been rough, she said. “It’s emotional. My mother’s 97 and … at least we could visit through a window and on phones, but it’s been difficult, just as a family, to really know what goes on inside when you’re not there to take care of your mother,” Hamann said. Just the same, locking down the facility had to be done, she said. “They had no choice but to have a lockdown. I’ve never questioned that for their safety,” Hamann said. “I do feel like now it is time and my mother’s simple request is to go for a ride by her old house, and where she grew up. That’s a simple request and something that we’ve not been able to do, and that’s a concern when your parent is 97 and you don’t know how much more life she has.
