Late free throws sink Spartans in quarterfinals
KANSAS CITY – The Spartans made their share of free throws against The Barstow School at Avila University in the Class 4 state boys basketball quarterfinals March 12.
Barstow senior Connor Arment made his share, too, particularly late in the fourth quarter. And in doing so, broke Richmond’s collective heart.
With Richmond leading 67-66, Arment sank two foul shots with 39.9 seconds remaining. He then sank two more with 17.7 seconds left to help end Richmond’s season with a 70-67 nail-biting loss.
“When I hit those four free throws, I thought the game was sealed, for sure,” Arment said. “We went up three. I knew my guys were going to step up and get a stop, and that’s what we did.”
Arment led all scorers with 29 points, including going 8-for-8 from the foul line to help the Knights go 11-for-14 overall. His performance drew praise from Richmond varsity boys coach Kevin Jermain.
