Quarterfinal loss ends Orrick’s deepest-ever playoff run

ORRICK – Varsity boys basketball coach Matt Brownsberger has many reasons to reflect fondly on this season, given his Bearcats’ achievements. “We repeated as district champions,” Brownsberger said Monday by phone. “We won our school’s first sectional. We ended up 16-7 overall.” Brownsberger admired the Bearcats for their steadiness in negotiating a season filled with COVIDand weather-induced disruptions to post their winning record and reach the Class 1 state quarterfinals. “Our guys did a great job staying focused and maintaining consistency … (through) everything this year,” he said. “So I’m very pleased with them. I’m pleased with the season.” One disappointment, Brownsberger acknowledged, was the team “came up short” on reaching the state semifinals. That opportunity came March 5, when the Bearcats hosted Mound City/Craig in quarterfinal action. They suffered a 61-30 season-ending loss.
