Daughters adopt road in mother’s name

RICHMOND – The Kansas City metro area’s Adopt-A-Highway coordinator, Vanessa Clark, works under a warm fall sun along north Highway 13 in Richmond on Saturday. “People get in contact with me to adopt a highway, who want to do the litter cleanup,” she says. In this case, the person who calls about cleaning a stretch of Highway 13 is Clark herself. “I adopted this stretch, from that sign that says, ‘In Loving Memory of Robin Graham’ – that’s for my mom. She passed away from cancer,” Clark says. Clark works on the site with family: a sister, Alisha Branham; Branham’s friend, Will Henry; a nephew, Zaiden Branham, 12; and a son, Dennis Clark, 11, Richmond. “We just come out here and take care of it,” Clark says. The cleanup agreement is for once per quarter. The family has done so for three years.
