Sheriff runs Inmate Work Program once more

After halting the Ray County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) Inmate Work Program in late September, Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers went back to the drawing board, reopening the program just last week. The program allowed Ray County Jail inmates to volunteer and work on county projects free of charge to those receiving the work. The inmates are in the custody of the RCSD and have supervision at all times, said Childers. The crew members sign a waiver in understanding the inmates are in custody, and their work is voluntary. “The waiver states they understand that what they’re doing is totally voluntary, it’s up to them whether they want to do it, and they will not be given any compensation,” Childers said. The sheriff said their insurance covers all projects and the program. Childers explained there were two main concerns residents had with the original program.
