County leaders address jail fixes, youth outreach initiatives

MIRANDA JAMISON Safety upgrades costing thousands of dollars have transformed the Ray County Jail as officials work to address persistent staffing shortages and rising youth substance use. Sheriff Gary Blackwell recently informed the Ray County Coalition the jail facility underwent approximately $100,000 in repairs after being shut down early this year due to safety concerns. Improvements included painting, plumbing, electrical updates, secured walls and updated internal communication systems. The department also revised inmate policies and procedures with guidance from an agency that helped the jail meet National Institute for Jail Operations certification standards. “With proper maintenance, we think the jail will be able to last another 10 to 15 years,” said Blackwell. The jail holds approximately 70 inmates, although the average daily population typically remains closer to 40 or 50.
