JEFFERSON CITY – The Republican dominated General Assembly passed a bill asking voters for a redo.

The effort, if successful, would maintain legislative districts that give Republicans overwhelming, veto-proof majorities in the House and Senate.

In 2018, 62% of voters passed Clean Missouri, a constitutional amendment. The measure seeks a more accurate representation of the public’s party preferences when voting for General Assembly members. A professional demographer would redraw district boundaries.

At this time, the House has 164 members, with 115, or 70%, being Republicans. The Senate has 34 members, with 24, or 70%, being Republicans. Although the party has huge majorities in the General Assembly, Missouri is not 70% Republican. In the last U.S. Senate election – between Republican Josh Hawley and Democrat Claire McCaskill, McCaskill drew 46%, or nearly half, of the vote.
