Brain development offers insight into youth behavior

From impulsive decisions to heightened emotions, adolescence can feel unpredictable for both youth and the adults guiding them. A recent virtual workshop helped parents and caregivers better understand how the developing brain influences behavior and why that understanding matters for prevention. The session was part of a three-part winter education series for parents and caregivers offered through Beacon Mental Health. The workshop, titled “The Brain Broadcast”, focused on explaining how the adolescent brain develops, why youth respond differently than adults and how caregivers can use that understanding to support healthier decision- making. The presentation was led by Community Prevention Specialist Emily Barnes, who began by grounding the discussion in a shared goal among participants.
