Board approves rezoning for trap shooting facility

The Ray County Planning and Zoning Board held its monthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 4, in the community room at the Ray County Library. A number of citizens attended to express their views on the agenda items. The first item on the agenda was an application for a Conditional Use Permit. The landowner, David Miller, requested a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) to operate a clay target shooting and training facility on a 42-acre parcel of land in northern Ray County. Miller has owned the property for more than 20 years and has been a trap shooting trainer for over 10 years, training people from across the country. The CUP will allow Miller to conduct training on his property by appointment only. Neighboring landowners Sharon Tindall, Matt Withers and Jennifer Huff related their concerns about the shooting facility decreasing property values and raising insurance rates due to the nature of the business.
