Virtual sports reporting has its perks – and its limits

For two weeks, I felt like small-town sports journalism’s version of Brian Wilson. Wilson, if you are unaware, has written and produced gorgeous pop music for roughly 60 years. Arguably, his best work has been with The Beach Boys, one of my favorite groups. As someone who pursues music as a side hustle, I have found his work inspirational. Unfortunately, tales of idiosyncrasies and seclusion are among traits that have helped craft a sense of mystique about Wilson. Urban legend has it that he camped out in his bed for a few years, overcome by a mix of chronic depression and narcotics. As Todd Leopold suggested in a 2012 story for CNN, the legend inspired “Brian Wilson,” the Barenaked Ladies’ track that references Wilson’s bed-bound periods in its chorus. Fortunately, Wilson’s emotional/mental health is better, and at age 78, he continues to record and perform. Unlike Wilson, COVID-19 was the cause for my seclusion.
