Spartans sting old playoff rival, Hornets, 42-7

RICHMOND – In the 1971 Class 3A state championship football game at Fulton, Richmond captured the crown in a nip-and-tuck battle, 29-25. Nearly half a century later, the teams met again, this time at Richmond. Once again, they looked evenly matched – at least to start. Each team scored on its first set of downs, with the Hornets holding a 7-6 lead for about seven minutes of play, leaving older fans glimpsing shadows from the past. But then came today’s Spartan ghostbusters. Junior quarterback Keyshaun Elliott, junior wide receiver Layne Cavanah, senior fullback Wyatt Marshall, senior running back Matthew Lopez, sophomore running back Trevin Quick and others exorcised spirits of bygone days. For the last three quarters, they dominated on both sides of the scrimmage line in a 42-7 victory. “It was a good team win. It’s good to celebrate with everyone – offensively, defensively, special teams. Everyone was playing hard and doing what we were supposed to do,” Quick said. The Hornets…
