Spartans plan to rest before district opener

RICHMOND – For the Spartans, winning the Missouri River Valley Conference East title is last week’s news. They look ahead to their first district pairing. Having won the MRVC East title outright, beating the other five divisional foes, Richmond gets a bye this week, meaning that while other teams play Friday, the Spartans will not. “We get to rest up,” junior quarterback Keyshaun Elliott said after Richmond beat Lexington 32-16 on the road Oct. 23 to claim the MRVC East crown. While players rest – letting purple bruises and minor sprains heal – they join coaches in looking forward to facing their first opponent, whoever that will be. “We’re excited,” coach Nick Persellsaid, but his assistant coaches will not rest. They will use the time to study potential competitors. “We’ll get out and scout next week a little bit,” Persell said.
