RICHMOND – COVID-19 knocked more than two dozen players from the Richmond High School football roster before the Spartans’ Oct. 2 game, varsity coach Nick Persell said. The Spartans scratched 26 players, he said on the field after their meeting with visiting Holden. “Eight starters,” quarterback Keyshaun Elliott added. “It wasn’t just starters, though,” Persell said. “It was our immediate backups who were out, too.” Subbing out slightly injured or winded players is difficult enough with fewer players. And the Spartans had little time to adjust. “We found out yesterday, pretty much,” Elliott said. “We tried to be simple,” Persell said. “All of our kids practice our base plays, so we were comfortable with that.” Simple worked. “We had some guys make some nice plays tonight,” Persell said.
