HIGGINSVILLE – The Spartans reap a harvest of points in their 54-34 win Sept. 25 over the perennial Missouri River Valley Conference East Division champion Lafayette County of Higginsville Huskers at Higginsville. But Richmond cannot find the winning points until the fourth quarter. “We knew we’d be in a tough ballgame and we were,” coach Nick Persell says. “Higginsville has really owned the conference here in eight of the last 10 years.” The Huskers thrashed the Spartans 47- 16 in 2018. The gap narrowed last year in a 26-16 loss. “It’s great,” junior Keyshaun Elliott, in his third year as quarterback, says. “I’ve wanted to beat them all through high school. It’s usually Lexington, but it’s changed to Higginsville – that’s our rivalry.” The win helps position Richmond to claim the MRVC East crown. “This helps us out a lot,” Elliott says.
