RICHMOND – The Spartans fell behind early and could not catch up when they faced Carrollton in their first varsity girls basketball game of the new year Jan. 3.

Richmond trailed 13-5 after one quarter and 22-12 at halftime. The Spartans edged the Trojans 10-9 the third quarter but got outscored 14-9 the final quarter to fall 45-31.

The lone Spartan in double figures, junior Ava Murphy, led Richmond in the Missouri River Valley Conference East Division home meeting with 10 points. Senior MacKenzie Brown led Carrollton with 23 points, followed by junior Jordan Myler with 10.

The Spartan girls rebounded from their loss Wednesday night with a 51-40 non-conference road win over Kingsville. They will continue their 2020 schedule in the Lawson Invitational Basketball Tournament. The fifth-seeded Spartans are slated to begin the eight-team tournament against fourth-seeded Lawson Jan. 13.
