Richmond boys pursure more titles with smaller bench

RICHMOND – The coronavirus pandemic is changing the number of players Richmond varsity boys basketball coach Kevin Jermain puts in the scorebook this season. Usually, Jermain has 15 Spartans suit up for games, he said Nov. 18 by phone. Because of COVID-19, he may carry one or two fewer roster spots. Chances are, filled roster spots will include juniors Layne Cavanah and Keyshaun Elliott, and senior Wyatt Covey. The trio helped the Spartans win their third straight Missouri River Valley Conference East Division title and their first district title in almost 50 years. Covey expects the Spartans to “be pretty solid” again this season. “We (have) brought back a lot of keys,” he said. “We (are) missing one really good player, but I think we’re pretty good as a team. I’m pretty excited about what we’re going to do.” That one good player is guard Dionte Marquez, who graduated. Marquez’s departure leaves the Spartans without a clearly defined “go-to guard” as the season gets underway,…
