RICHMOND – The Spartans’ defense got stingy to start this week of varsity softball. After yielding 38 runs last week in their first two games, both losses, the Spartans posted back-to-back shutouts Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, they cruised to a 15-0 Missouri River Valley Conference East Division road win in five innings over Lexington. They then ran away from the Tina-Avalon/Norborne/Southwest of Livingston County co-op 10-0 Tuesday, also in five innings, at Southview Park. “We’re just getting better every time we step out on the field,” Richmond coach Staci Maddux said. “We were a little shaky the first couple games. We played some tough teams and the girls were a little nervous, I think. But it seems like they’re really starting to settle in.” Jaedyn Lopez pitched both shutouts. She struck out five, allowed two hits and walked one against Lexington.
