Only boys, no seniors, among H-C runners

HARDIN – This season, the Hardin-Central cross country program is almost an all-boys club. As this preview went to preview, there were no girl runners. Kari Winfrey, who is in her third season as coach, is the lone female. “I scared them away,” Winfrey cracked Aug. 20. “That’s what the boys tell me, anyways. They say I’m too intense.” Winfrey’s boys club is a no-seniors club, too. The varsity squad consists of juniors Mason Freece, Isaac Heil and Korbin Pugh; sophomores Ben Barnett and Mason McCaulley; and freshman Kameron Pugh. Having no seniors is “actually going to be nice,” Winfrey said. “These boys will be able to work together this year and build upon that for next year’s season,” she said. Freece inherited the team leadership role from Robbie Crippen, who graduated this summer.
