RICHMOND – Richmond High School football caoch Nick Persell is seeing an increase in participation in 11-man football. When Persell started in 2015 as an assistant on Rob Bowers’ staff, the numbers “were down in the 30s,” he estimated. In his third season as head varsity coach and his fifth as offensive coordinator, Persell reported Aug. 11 there were 60 players, grades 9-12 in the program. “We may be even up to 65 by the time we get going (this season),” he said. Whatever the final tally is, Persell plans to have all of the players in the program suit up for varsity games, as is “standard practice” at Richmond. “We feel like our young kids put a lot of time in and they deserve to be on the sidelines, just like everybody else,” he said. “It’s a good experience for those young guys.” Persell understands, however, the Spartans might have to limit their numbers to “a necessary roster of kids who are potentially going to be in the game” each week because of coronavirus-related…
