NFL draft provides moment to remember for Elliott, Persell
April 25, 2026, will likely be a date that Richmond graduate Keyshaun Elliott and Richmond varsity football coach Nick Persell will remember for years to come.
That day in Pittsburgh, Elliott was announced as the 166th overall pick of this year’s NFL draft, held April 2325 in Pittsburgh. Persell was in Liberty, coaching his son Brady in baseball when he heard the news, he stated Tuesday via email.
“We were following the draft all morning on the way to the game, and right before the start of the game, my wife told me he just got drafted by the Chicago Bears,” Persell recounted. “I FaceTimed with him to congratulate him.”
Elliott, who played college football at New Mexico State University and then Arizona State University, is the first player during Persell’s tenure as head varsity coach to turn pro and the second during Persell’s time at Richmond overall.
