Loss of friend makes KC’s Super Bowl win more special

The Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV championship became more special for me over the weekend, in a poignant way. Sunday afternoon, I was saddened to learn that Mark Moyer, a longtime friend and former Richmond High School classmate, had died at age 53. In reflecting on my friendship with Moyer – or “M of M,” as I called him – I thought about us watching Kansas City’s Super Bowl victory Feb. 2 on television at his apartment near Shirkey Golf Course in Richmond. It was the last sports event we watched together. That championship – one I am sure both of us wondered if we would ever live to see – is part of at least three decades’ worth of memories of watching sports together, off and on. There are several other Super Bowls among those memories. They include watching San Francisco’s shellacking of Denver in Super Bowl XXIV, much to our delight, when M of M lived with his parents in a small house about a quarter-mile west of the Richmond city limits, off Missouri Highway 10 headed…
