Johnson to resume jumping for UCM after injury, pandemic

WARRENSBURG – The coronavirus pandemic has provided Nicole Johnson some recovery time. In January, Johnson was training at the University of Central Missouri, where she is a triple jumper and long jumper on the women’s track and field team. Johnson, a 2017 Richmond graduate and two-time Class 3 state medalist in both the long and triple jumps, broke her left ankle. “We weren’t even really jumping yet,” she recalled Tuesday by phone. “We were just doing our warmup (routine) and there was a hole in the sand pit, and I came down and landed with all my weight on that left foot. And my ankle snapped inwards; (it was) just like my heel went toward the center of my body.” Suffering breaks on the medial and lateral sides of her foot, Johnson underwent surgery. Seven screws and a plate were inserted, she said. “Definitely threw a wrench in my plans,” Johnson said. Still, Johnson stayed involved with the program.
