Jenkins, Baker go undefeated at ES tourney
Richmond sophomore Izzy Jenkins sensed she had the upper hand for her final wrestling match at the Excelsior Springs High School Girls Tournament.
After winning the first of her three round-robin matches by decision and the second by pin, Jenkins capped the night by facing Excelsior Springs’ Makayla Maring. She pinned Maring in 2 minutes, 28 seconds to finish her run to the 115-pound Division AA title.
“She didn’t feel as, like, sturdy as me,” Jenkins said. “She didn’t go into the match as I thought she would.”
Jenkins was one of two Richmond titlists. Taylor Baker, the younger sister of former Richmond boys wrestler Gabe Baker, went 3-0 to nab the 155 AC title. All of her victories were by first-period pin.
Capping the tournament by pinning Chillicothe’s Daivy Creason will prove beneficial in a few months, according to the younger Baker.
