Former JH coach leads varsity ’Cats in latest v-ball campaign
ORRICK – Trevor Ballard has a new job with Orrick’s volleyball program.
After coaching the junior high program last season, Ballard has moved on to helm the high school program. He succeeds Emily Brownsberger, who coached last season and succeeded Seth Smith.
Ballard finds coaching varsity volleyball different than junior high in one key way. In junior high, “they want to kind of make it fun and just give everybody a chance” to play, he said Aug. 25 by phone. In contrast, high schoolers must earn their positions – “nobody’s guaranteed anything,” he said.
“It’s just kind of a mindset and a focus difference,” Ballard said.
In terms of techniques, however, Ballard sees no difference between coaching junior high or high school volleyballers.
“Advanced volleyball or advanced any sport is nothing but the basics mastered really well,” he said.
