Conscience-wrestling, motorsports provide welcome learning experience
Some wrestling matches with my conscience and a sports-related road trip have helped me learn a lot over the past week or so.
Since briefly commenting on the George Floyd tragedy in my June 5 column – and wrestling over whether I showed sensitivity in discussing it, given its context in the column, etc. – I have learned that others share my view. In my previous column, I stated that the tragedy shows how we humans, particularly we Americans, have not made as much progress in treating people with dignity and fairness or in living together peacefully as we sometimes like to think we have. One person who shares my view is Dr. Karissa L. Niehoff, executive director of the National Federation of High Schools, whose member associations include the Missouri State High School Activities Association.
