ORRICK – Varsity coach Eric Fairchild got a glimpse of Orrick’s future in 8-man football during the Bearcats’ 67-34 Sept. 19 thumping of visiting Braymer/Breckenridge. The Bearcats, whose officiating crew included former pro football player Elvis Patterson, rolled to a 43-6 halftime lead by scoring on their six first-half possessions. Orrick’s 37-point lead allowed Fairchild to give his younger players additional game reps. “That’s invaluable experience for those kids,” he said. The more youthful Bearcats “are going to be really good players as they get more time and more seasoning,” Fairchild said. Starting quarterback Blake Buchanan also liked he what he saw from Orrick’s young reserves – and the seasoned players. “Proud of our whole team,” Buchanan said. Buchanan, a junior, helped set the stage for the younger players to get experience by throwing four TD passes and rushing for a touchdown during the first half of the Central Rivers Conference nondivisional meeting.
