Karen Louise Vandiver, 70, of Orrick passed away Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024, at the Olathe Hospice House in Olathe, Kan. Karen was born Nov. 7, 1953, in Lexington, the daughter of Robert Stroud and Billie Marie (Cheshier) Pennington. She was united in marriage to Michael Dean “Mike” Vandiver on June 25, 1971. He preceded her in death on March 30, 2010.

Survivors include two daughters, Dana Marie (Todd Bishop) Vandiver of North Kansas City and Andrea (Parker) Byron of Olathe; five grandchildren, Taylor Handley, Ryan Bishop, Kylie Weems, Tyler Weems and Allyson Byron; brother, Roger (Marsha) Pennington of Excelsior Springs; and two sisters, Nina Courtney of Richmond and Robin (Patrick) Cado of Lexington. Two sisters-in-law, Lisa (Brian) Thomas and Jackie Vandiver; and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Larry Pennington; sister, Joyce Stock; and brother-in-law, Doug Courtney.

Karen was reared and educated in the area of her birth and graduated in 1971 from Orrick High School. She was active in sports during her high school years and played in the band, both the clarinet and oboe. Her love and ability in sports would continue throughout her life as an avid golfer.

In addition to raising her family, she worked as a secretary in both the legal and medical fields.

Karen loved crafts and creating things. She especially enjoyed decorating and gardening. Her house was her pride and joy. Karen did the landscaping and decorating. She cherished family get-togethers and spending time with her grandkids.

Karen will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation and funeral services were scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 22, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m., followed by the services at 3. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Southpoint Cemetery, Orrick.
