James “Jimmy” Cheek, 72, Lawson, passed away Sept. 10, 2020.

Visitation took place from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Sept 14, with memorial service following at Lawson Christian and Presbyterian Church, with burial at Lawson Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to a charity of choice.

Jimmy was born Jan. 17, 1948, in Excelsior Springs to James and Virginia (Shearer) Cheek. His father died in a vehicle accident before he was born. Virginia later married Stephen Nolker, who raised him as his own. Jimmy graduated from Lawson High School in 1966. For two years, he went to Wentworth Military Academy, where he played football and then went on to graduate from William Jewell College. He worked at Lawson Bank before going to work at Ford Motor Co., retiring after 30-plus years.

Jimmy married Debbie Green on July 26, 1996. He loved playing golf and drinking with his buddies at the Excelsior Springs Golf Club, playing town team baseball, watching the Chiefs and Mizzou, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie, of the home; children, Ryan Cheek of Kansas City, Kelly (Renae) Cheek of Lawson, Lisa (Tim) Broughton of Lawson, Tricia Wartenbee of Richmond, Melyssa Cheek of Kansas City, Eric (Nicole) Wartenbee of Nebraska; a sister, Stephanie (Donnie) Myers of Lawson; a brother, Stephen (Mark) Nolker of Peacham, Vermont; 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.
