Charles Edward “Cody” Russell, 85, of Hardin, passed away at 6 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 2020, at North Kansas City Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Cody was born on April 10, 1935, in Lakeview, to Roscoe Edward and Elsie Bell (Dooley) Russell. He was united in marriage to Glenda Louise Strain of Hardin on May 27, 1966.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Glenda Louise Russell of Hardin; two sons, Scott (Rhonda) Russell of Hardin and Dennis (Darlene) Kallenberger of Richmond; grandson, Walker Russell of Blue Springs; and sister, Gloria (Ben) Earley of Simpsonville, Kentucky; three brothers-in-law, Jim Strain of Hardin, Charles Strain of Richmond and L. W. Strain of Apache Junction, Arizona; and a sister-in-law, Sue Stark of Carrollton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert “Bob” Russell; and brother-in-law, Norman Gene Strain.

Cody graduated in 1953 from Hardin. He served in the U.S. Army from March 1958 to February 1964. He worked at Fry Roofing in North Kansas City, Lake City Armory, KW Dart Co. in Kansas City for 22 years and retired from S & K Industries in 1997 as a security guard.

Cody loved hunting, gardening, yardwork and shooting squirrels in his backyard. More than anything, he loved his family. He always enjoyed when the family got together. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends – a quiet man with a big heart.

He was a member of the Hardin American Legion Post 487, had served on the Hardin Cemetery Board since 1998 and was a volunteer with the Hardin Fire Department.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either Children’s Mercy Hospital or to the Hardin Cemetery. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Homel; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation with memorial services were held on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2020, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation started at 10 a.m., with services following at 11 a.m. Inurnment occurred in Hardin Cemetery, with full military honors.
