Woman takes steps forward against suicide

HARDIN – Having been touched personally by suicide, Samara Gant said she hopes to keep suicide from touching others. Gant is the driving force behind Out of Darkness, an American Foundation for the Prevention of Suicide fundraiser. The event will start with registration from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by the walk until 1 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Hardin-Central High School track. Last year’s walk in Richmond drew about 50 participants and raised $2,000. Gant said she expects to do at least as well this year to raise money to help the foundation provide services – such as research, school training and support groups – to reduce the suicide rate. The event will include a silent auction of themed gift baskets, among them being cooking, pets and “dress up” for children, Gant said. Participants will include the Ray County Sheriff’s Office.
