RICHMOND – Republican Scott Childers campaigned for sheriff Aug. 29 at Maurice Roberts Park. “I do believe the rain, certainly, put a damper – pun intended – on the amount of people who were going to show up,” he said. Childers pledged changes in how the sheriff’s office is run. “It is not fair to a citizen that is reporting a sexual assault or to a child who has been abused (if somebody’s) not been trained on how to deal with a situation like that,” he said. “If it’s not appropriately handled, that can do almost as much damage to the victim as what the actual incident (did).” He did cite specific examples of such incidents having caused issues in Ray County. Childers, a Richmond High School graduate who is challenging incumbent Garry Bush, called for follow-ups with those who report crimes. “Cases take years to go (through the courts), especially when you’re talking (about) persons crimes,” he said.
