Pupils wear masks even on playground as safety precaution

RICHMOND – Recess remains recess for children at Sunrise Elementary School on the city’s east side – playing kickball, laughing and talking. But there is a difference this year. Like her classmates on the asphalt playground, third-grader Ariel Lee wears a facemask for safety. Her mask is black, with the school district’s Spartan team emblem covering almost half of the left side. Lee said she takes wearing the mask seriously – in the classroom, on the bus, on the playground and on and on everywhere that requires safety and social distancing. Sometimes, at home, her stuffed animals wear masks, too, she said. “I do fashion shows with my stuffed animals and I (wear a mask) when I get in and out of my princess dresses,” she said, and the stuffed animals also wear tutus. Jeanie Adams said her great-granddaughter, Lee, is focused on safety.
