No Veterans Day at county courthouse

RICHMOND – Veterans Day could not be observed at the Ray County Courthouse this year. Veterans held the observance at the Veterans Building. The courthouse event had to be canceled because of the coronavirus and moved to the Veterans Building. Commissioner Allen Dale made the announcement by phone. He did so while quarantined because of possible contact with a person who has the virus. “I can tell you how sincere we are about trying to keep that (virus) locked down,” Dale said. “We’ve even canceled the VFW, our veterans, at the courthouse.” Countywide virus cases are up 64%, or 160 cases, in the past month. The number jumped from 249 on Oct. 19 to 409 cases reported Tuesday. Dale and Presiding Commissioner Bob King also declined to reopen the Senior Center because of the virus. Closing the center caused Republicans to change the location of a party, and three churches changed the location for a planned community Thanksgiving luncheon.
