The cartoon we ran in Monday’s paper was controversial (and highly opinionated), but wasn’t chosen to reflect on local law enforcement. It was tied to the unfortunate situation in Ferguson, which is far too complicated to resolve with any one point of view.

We have good working relationships with Richmond Police and Ray County Sheriff’s Department, ones we value, and are impressed both by the work they do and their policing priorities. We understand the cartoon we chose was stronger than readers are used to and was offensive to some. For that we apologize. If it does provoke some constructive thought and discussion, then that can be a good thing.
