RICHMOND – Area nursing homes recorded dozens of COVID-19 cases and several deaths, based on ProPublica reporting. “This is data the nursing home itself is reporting to the federal government,” ProPublica Deputy Managing Editor Charles Ornstein stated Monday by email. An independent, non-profit newsroom, ProPublica revealed these stats from area nursing facilities: • Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehab, 1003 Meadowlark Lane, 84 cases and 13 deaths among residents and staff; • Valley Manor and Rehabilitation Center, 1410 Hospital Drive, Excelsior Springs, 119 cases involving 87 residents and 32 staffers, and two deaths; and • Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 804 Wollard Blvd., Richmond, 14 cases. Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehab declined comment, per company policy, including the opportunity to submit a written statement about whether ProPublica had the information right or wrong.
