New district commander installed

SPRINGFIELD – During a change of command ceremony Saturday, David Klaassen, Richmond, was installed the district commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars District 1 for 2019-2020.

He replaces Don Brockmeier, Carrollton, who will become the district recruiter.

District 1 leads the department with more than 108 percent membership in 11 posts, including Post 4398 at Richmond, which is Klaassen’s home post.

All of the posts in District 1 are at 100 percent or higher, including Hale, which has 28 members. Post 1773, Carrollton, has the most members at 187. There are more than 1,100 members in District 1.

Since July 1, VFW members are inviting eligible veterans to join, renew or reinstate their membership and encouraging members to actively participate at their posts.

During the 2018-2019 service year, VFW Department of Missouri initiated 1,093 new members and reinstated 274 members, growing from 31,314 in 2018 to 31,644.

Nationally, for the first time in 27 years, VFW membership is more than 101 percent, with 1,115,261 members, and 37 departments are at 100 percent or higher.
