Youth-laden ’Cats adapting to new coach, high school softball
ORRICK – The Bearcats’ varsity softball success this spring will depend partly on their ability to adapt, sophomore infielder Janie Kilgore said.
For starters, the Bearcats must adapt to Zach McGill as their new skipper.
“We’re trying new things,” Kilgore said.
A 2011 Richmond High School graduate who also coaches varsity girls basketball, McGill replaces Shelly Bendure. He is the program’s fourth coach since Orrick began offering spring softball in 2017.
As a former high school, junior college and NAIA college baseball player and as a former assistant baseball coach at Richmond, McGill is adapting to softball’s nuances. Ditto assistant coach Tom Pierce.
Specifically, McGill and Pierce are adapting to coaching softball pitchers, they agreed.
“The whole mechanic of it is different,” McGill said March 16 after practice in the Orrick High School gym. “But at the same time, it’s the same. So it’s just a matter of doing our studying and familiarizing ourselves.”
