Wood hones changeup to prep for juco softball

Elizabeth Wood knows she has some work to do. Wood, a Richmond senior, has signed a letter of intent to pitch for the Moberly Area Community College (MACC) softball program. To prepare herself to face junior college-level hitters, the right-handed hurler is working to get her changeup consistently around 48 mph, she said minutes after a short signing ceremony Nov. 20 in the Richmond High School gym. When Wood’s changeup is off, it runs about the same speed as her fastball, she said. Her fastball has topped out at 64 mph, she said. To get her changeup consistently in the upper 40s, Wood throws the pitch about 30 minutes per day, she said. Wood, however, is probably less concerned about her go-to pitch, the curveball. “I have always been more comfortable with my curveball because it just is the one that works the best, besides my fastball and my drop ball,” she said. “It always goes where I need it to go.” Wood expects she’ll use her curveball, changeup and other pitches in relief…
