Win draws raves from Vantrump, Swope, Claypole
Richmond varsity girls basketball coach Kaylee Vantrump had a new pick for best performance of the season after the Spartans’ 54-30 Missouri River Valley Conference (MRVC)-East Division win Feb. 7 over visiting Holden.
“Holden’s a very solid team who have beat a lot of the other good teams in the conference, and we came out tonight with high energy and they got things done,” Vantrump said.
One thing the Spartans got done was feeding the ball to players in space on transition plays. Repeatedly, the Richmond girls made defensive stops while protecting their rim and heaved passes downcourt for perimeter players like Adilyn Swope and Genevieve Didier to drive for layups.
Richmond’s transition game “was really good,” Swope said.
Rebounding was key to producing opportunities to score, Vantrump and post player Candiace Claypole agreed.
“Rebounds definitely helped us get in transition and get the ball back up (the floor) and get more points,” Claypole said.
