Turner proud of Richmond volleyballers in season opener
RICHMOND – Varsity volleyball coach Crystal Turner found reasons to be proud of her Spartans after their 3-0 season-opening sweep Sept. 2 by visiting Summit Christian Academy.
“We hung with them and kind of … (gave) them a little bit of a scare there in the first couple of games,” Turner said.
Richmond kept pace with Summit Christian for part of the first two sets before falling by double digits – 25-12 the first set, 25-15 the second. Falling behind 4-0 in the first set, the Spartans rallied and tied it three times before the Eagles took control by breaking an 8-8 deadlock with an 11-2 run.
In the second set, the Spartans took a 2-0 lead. After losing the lead, they rebounded by tying the score five times. The Eagles broke the final deadlock, 12- 12, by outscoring the Spartans 13-3 the rest of the way.
Like the second set, the Spartans led early in the final set. They scored the first three points and were up 5-2 when the Eagles staged a 23-2 run to win 25- 7, capping an evening…
