Swope’s last-second free throws ice victory over Minutewomen
LEXINGTON – Physically, Adilyn Swope might not have felt much like shooting free throws around 8 p.m. Feb. 14.
But when Swope had to shoot them to help ice Richmond’s 60-55 Missouri River Valley Conference (MRVC)-East Division road win over Lexington in varsity girls basketball, she did.
Fouled with 3.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter and Richmond ahead 58-55, the first-year high schooler was awarded two shots. Swope sank both.
“Adilyn actually is down with the flu, and so, we weren’t sure if we were going to have her this game. I know it was tough playing sick, and you couldn’t tell by how she was performing,” Richmond coach Kaylee Vantrump said. “She did fantastic.”
Swope’s shots helped the Spartans sweep the Minutewomen this season. Richmond won 48-46 Jan. 24 at Richmond.
Winning the rematch was “definitely sweeter” for junior post player Candiace Claypole.
