Stevinson places second, Buchanan takes third at district meet

CLEVELAND – May 8 was hardly a great javelin-throwing day, Orrick junior Blake Buchanan said after competing in the boys javelin that afternoon at the Class 1 District 7 track and field meet on the Midway School District campus. “It was super-windy,” Buchanan said. Still, Buchanan negotiated the wind well enough to throw 43.87 meters and place third. He advanced to the sectional competition, slated for Saturday at Lafayette County of Higginsville. The top four finishers in each event advanced. “Just kind of an off day, but I still made it out of districts. … I have to work on (my) footwork in practice this week,” Buchanan said. “It’s my main focus.” Making it out of District 7 was noteworthy to Orrick varsity coach Paul Giffin, who looked “across the way” from his duties at the shot put area to watch Buchanan throw. “We have a very competitive district for the javelin,” Giffin stated May 8 via email. “At this level, it is simply advance to the next weekend.
